Between May and October, ambient relative humidity frequently surpasses 85%, followed within weeks by Harmattan winds that plummet ambient humidity below 20%. In unengineered furniture, this dramatic swing causes large surface slabs to cup, drawer margins to twist out of square, and joints to pull apart.
At Konkaya, we protect contemporary furniture through a three-tier engineering protocol:
1. Hardwood Equilibrium Curing: Every plank of Nigerian Iroko, Sapele, or Teak undergoes a continuous 21- to 30-day thermal curing cycle in our Works Layout facility, stabilizing internal moisture content at exactly 10% to 12% before machining.
2. Concealed Relief & Floating Splines: Rather than rigidly locking large solid timber spans, we mill concealed longitudinal expansion channels and hidden structural steel subframes beneath tabletop surfaces and inside door leaves. This allows natural micro-movement without surface distortion.
3. Balanced 6-Sided Moisture Sealing: Every face, rebate, and fastener pocket receives multi-stage industrial matte lacquer barriers, ensuring equalized atmospheric resistance on all sides.
The result is modern furniture that maintains its pristine architectural lines through decades of tropical climate cycles.
Every piece of timber cut at Konkaya is seasoned in-house for a minimum of 21 to 30 days to reach 10%–12% equilibrium moisture content (EMC). We seal all six faces of every component with industrial polyurethane moisture barriers to resist coastal humidity and dry Harmattan winds.
