The Workshop & Master Woodwork Discipline
We operate a 1,200 m² dedicated furniture and architectural woodwork facility in Works Layout, Owerri. Every kitchen cabinet, dining table, wardrobe, and wall panel is precision-machined, kiln-seasoned, and pre-assembled by our permanent crew before site delivery.
Why Most Custom Furniture Fails in Nigeria
Southern and Eastern Nigeria experience intense climate extremes: heavy monsoon rains with ambient humidity regularly climbing above 85%, followed immediately by the bone-dry, dusty Harmattan season. When local timber is harvested green and rushed into carpentry without proper seasoning, it retains up to 30% water content.
As soon as the dry Harmattan winds arrive, unseasoned roadside wood shrinks violently, cracking down the center of dining tables, warping wardrobe doors, and jamming drawers. Conversely, during the heavy rainy season, imported flat-pack furniture made of cheap compressed sawdust (particleboard) absorbs moisture like a sponge, swelling until the hinges rip out of the board.
At Konkaya, we refuse both shortcuts. We season our Nigerian hardwoods in our workshop kilns down to a scientifically verified 10% to 12% equilibrium moisture content. We treat every plank against wood borers and subterranean termites, and we seal every raw edge with multi-stage industrial polyurethane moisture barriers.
Engineering Protocols
In-House Kiln Seasoning (10–12% MC)
Raw Iroko, Sapele, and Teak planks are kiln-conditioned for 21 to 30 days before touching a planer or saw. Moisture levels are digitally verified across the core to guarantee zero seasonal cracking during Harmattan.
High-Density Marine Cores (Zero Swelling)
All internal kitchen carcasses, bathroom vanities, and wardrobes are machined from moisture-resistant marine boards—never porous foreign chipboard or low-grade compressed sawdust.
100% Dry Assembly in Workshop
Every project is fully dry-fitted on our 1,200 m² workshop floor before finishing. Drawer alignments, soft-close dampening, and shadow gaps are verified before loading into transport.
Permanent Installation Crew
We never subcontract site fitting to roadside day-laborers. The same joiners who machined your pieces in Owerri travel directly to your site in Port Harcourt, Enugu, Asaba, Abuja, or Lagos to ensure flawless installation.
Timber Species We Select & Machine
We source ethically harvested Nigerian hardwood species and select imported architectural veneers suited for heavy residential and commercial duty.
Nigerian Iroko / Oji (Milicia excelsa)
Known locally as Oji. Extremely dense, naturally oily, and virtually immune to termites and moisture rot. The premier wood choice for massive solid dining tables, kitchen breakfast counters, and grand door frames.
Sapele Mahogany (Entandrophragma cylindricum)
Celebrated for its striking ribbon-stripe grain and rich reddish-brown lustre. Highly stable against humidity shifts; ideal for heavy entrance pivot doors, parlour feature walls, and executive office furniture.
West African Teak (Tectona grandis)
Naturally rich in silica and natural rubber oils, giving it peerless water repellency and dimensional stability. Preferred for bathroom vanity surrounds, wet kitchen cabinetry, and luxury bedroom credenzas.
Smoked White Oak & Black Walnut
Quartersawn and crown-cut architectural veneers bonded under hydraulic heat pressure over moisture-resistant cores for modern minimalist walk-in closets, TV media units, and executive boardroom suites.
